Designer Julien Macdonald who calls plus-size models as 'a joke' is now eating his words and wants to see more of them.
Julien Macdonald sent ripples through the fashion world last year when he referred to plus-size models as 'a joke'.
Macdonald - who has an OBE for services to fashion - backtracked, telling Look Magazine: 'You can be real and still be sexy. Bigger girls can compete against girls half their size. This show has been a real eye-opener.'
The Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model judge said he would support curvy women both on the show and beyond.
'There is a gap in the market,' Macdonald said, 'and if someone good wanted to represent my brand, I'd do it.'
'Women on the street don't relate to all this talk of plus sizes, and it creates an "us and them" mentality, which leads to comments like the ones Julien Macdonald has made.'
The tide is slowly changing though - as Macdonald's comments demonstrate.
Last year's America's Next Top Model winner was curvy plus size Whitney Thompson.
And Vogue Italia featured three curvy models on their July issue 'Real Beauties' cover.
So maybe Macdonald is just taking an unusual move for a designer. He's now following a trend rather than setting it.
